I asked a couple of questions on Nyaya and Vaisheshika. I did not receive any answers, I presume because no one on here has read those texts yet. Hence, I ask this question, as I believe it will give everyone an idea on what questions are more likely to be answered and what questions to ask.

  • what questions to ask.-- I am afraid that won't be the case. No user will check this post and the 5 answers before asking their questions. They will ask whatever questions they are being bothered with.

  • Since there is a possibility of hopeless outdatedness, have you read Swami Deshikan's Yadavabhyudayam?

  • @Surya No, I haven't read the Yadavabhyudayam; I haven't come across an English translation of it. Concerning the Vishnudharmottara Purana, there's a translation published by the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts. I can try to find it again. And yeah, it continues to be out of date, I need to add a whole bunch of Samkhya, Nyaya, and Vaisheshika works to the list. Commented Sep 13, 2017 at 3:03
  • @Surya I may provide more links later, but on a quick Google search I found two books which translate a part of the Vishnudharmottara Purana: archive.org/details/in.ernet.dli.2015.127780 archive.org/details/vishnudharmottar031493mbp Commented Sep 13, 2017 at 3:14

@SwiftPushkar Sure: archive.org/details/NyayaManjariOfJayantaBhatta By the way, Jayanta Bhatta is one of the few philosophers who belonged to the actual Nyaya school rather than belonging to some other school like Navyanyaya (like Udayana) or Vedanta (like Vachaspati Mishra) and just writing about Nyaya from the outside. @SwiftPushkar That’s by Pillai Lokacharya, not Ramanujacharya, but yes I’ve read it. By the way, here are Ramanujacharya’s nine works: the Sri Bhashya, the Vedanta Sara, the Vedanta Dipa, the Bhagavad Gita Bhashya, thd Vedartha Sangraha, the Sharanagati Gadya, the Sri Ranga Gadya, the Vaikuntha Gadya, and the Nitya Grantha. I’ve read all of them except the Nitya Grantha. Commented Feb 6, 2019 at 14:23
  • @KeshavSrinivasan ji would you recommend reading Vedas in English or Hindi/any other language in Devanagari script closer to Sanskrit? As i feel after reading some of the english translations all of its philosophical value and essence is lost because often the ppl who have translated the texts compare/translate vedic terms in the light of christian theology which heavily distorts the meaning.... One minor correction: it should be Apastamba Dharma Sutras, not Apastamba Dharma Shastra, and similarly for Gautama, Baudhayana, and Vasishta. They are Dharmashastra texts, but their actual names are Dharma Sutras because they're in aphoristic format. By the way, two other Dharmashastra texts you might want to read are the Yagnavalkya Smriti and the Vaikhanasa Dharma Sutras. I can give you links if you're interested. Oh, you read Vedanta Desikan's Isha Upanishad Bhashya? That's great! You can go multiple directions from there. I can give you links to other works of Vedanta Desikan. And I can give you links to other Sri Vaishnava Upanishad Bhashyas. Commented Mar 27, 2018 at 19:37
  • @KeshavSrinivasan Thanks! That'll be deeply appreciated. :)

I have fully read the following texts

  1. Bhagavad Gita
  2. Patanjali Yoga Sutras
  3. Katha Upanishad
  4. Isha Upanishad

Read these partially

  1. Odia Bhagavad Purana by Atibadi Jagannatha Das
  2. Odia Mahabharata by Sarala Das
  3. Valmiki Ramayana

And I am currently reading

  1. Kena Upanishad

I became interested in philosophy in college days.

Having studied in Bengal, I studied two major sects of Bengal.

  1. RamaKrishna sect with biographies of RamaKrishna and vivekananda and some other works like Raja Yoga etc...

  2. Chaitanya sect with biographies of Chaitanya and primary works of Gaudiyas like six sandarbhas etc.. and some ISKCON books.

  3. Some Upanishads and a bit of brahma sutras.

  4. Had interest to study Shaktism, but I passed out by then.

  5. Bhagavad-Gita

  6. A bit of Bhagavata-purana. But since six Sandarbhas are nothing but explanations of bhagavatam, I can say I studied most of the bhagavatam though not sequentially.

  7. Brahma samhita.

Then something about other religions from internet sources. A bit about other sects as well.

Seeing the host of contradictory claims by each sects, I lost interest in all these though I have good knowledge of Gaudiya Vaishnavism and RamaKrishna mission.

I also read books like 'God Delusion' and many youtube videos of Sam Harris and others.

As such I don't subscribe to any of the things now and just do whatever feels good.

I am much shocked and surprised to know that after reading so much of the wonderful literature especially of two sects, you lost interest seeing the contradiction. Do not you feel that these contradictions are only apparent?

I do have read quite a number of scriptures, mostly online. The only texts that I possess in hardcopy form are

  1. Śrimadbhagavadgītā
  2. Devīmāhatmya
  3. Śrī Śrī Rāmakṛṣṇa Kathāmṛta

Outside these 3 books, other knowledge would mostly come in the form of storybooks (which I don't consider to be worth mentionable in this site, except for the condensed version of the Rāmāyaṇa & Mahābhārata by Upendrakiśora Rāyachaudhurī in Bengali).

After joining Quora, I realised the greatness of the Sanskrit canonical texts. At that time, I acquired the softcopy of these texts
